Power Transmission - Electrical Terms

Air Circuit Breakers: These are used to interrupt circuits while current flows through them. Nosebleed?
1) Open and close a 3 phase circuit, mapamanual man o automatic
2) Pinuputol kaagad ang circuit pag may under or over voltage, under or over frequency, short circuit, reverse power, earth fault etc.
3) Binabawasan nito yung arcing property pag may overloading (arcing means tuloy tuloy na pagdischarge ng current

Alternating current. AC : Eelctric current na pabalik balik ang direksyo; usually 50 or 60 cycles per second or 50//60 Hz. (Japan and other Asian countris: 50 Hz; Philippines and USA: 60 Hz)

Batteries: Backup para sa control system in case may blackout

Capacitance and Capacitor:
Capacitance: ability ng isang object to store electricity.
Capacitor : Consist of two electrical conductors (things that let electricity flow through them) with an insulator to separate them (a material that doesn't let electricity flow very well).

Conduits: Pwedeng rigid metal or plastic, proteksyon ng wiring sa isang circuit;

Dielectric: Pag ang isang dielectric ay nasa isang circuit, electric charges do not flow through the material as they do in a conductor, so parang nasstock lang sila dun, thus getting the term "capacitance", tama ba..?

Hanggang dito na lang muna..

Young Engineers in the Real World, Tsk tsk

Someone asked me, "What's your passion?" I replied with a question, "What does passion mean?"
Well, it's not that hindi ko alam, ayaw ko lang syang sagutin. Now, it has already been more than 6 years since I graduated but after those years, I am now unsure what exactly I want to be. Reality bites, I have my own share of
experiences, that may have triggered me to lie low in engineering industry.

I have always been hungry for inspiration and advice, being a woman in technical field. It seems that I always wanted
to find myself in something where I would fit perfectly like a piece of a puzzle. But in everything I do, I always put my heart into it. It just that there are some things that engineering jobs here in the Philippines that needs to be fixed, mga bagay bagay na kulang sa pansin para sa akin.

First and foremost, it is never easy to pass a licensure exam, since it is actually one of the greatest challenges na kakaharapin ng mga graduate sa EE. Just to get a license, kailangan mong magreview at magbayad para sa exam mismo. And after being able to pass, halos magtatalon sa tuwa dahil sa wakas, medyo madali na mag-apply ng trabaho.

Ika nga, dapat maging "wise beyond our years". Sa mga batang engineers, andun yung "fresh enrgy" at "new perspectives", excitement at pag-asa, at expectations. An engineering position, is a "NO TO PETIX MODE" and "NO TO HAPPY-GO-LUCKY lifestyle", especially pag nagsisimula ka palng. It will always be a challenge na maging seryoso sa trabaho at mag-enjoy pag day-off. I don't mean na dapat maging seryoso masyado, yung tipong alang ngitian, pero pag ikaw ay bago pa lang, at marami pang dapat matutunan, it seems that age is a filtering system, lalo na sa mga pinoy. There will always be subordinates na may mga edad na, may pamilya, maraming karanasan sa buhay na magtratrabaho as your subordinates. Don't make quick decisions, dapat pag-aralan lahat ng gagawin. It's not wrong na tanungin an ibang mas may alam kung di kaw sigurado, but you also have to make a stand na kaya mong magdesisyon base sa sariling pananaw, dahil in the first place, hindi kaw nilagay sa posisyon na yan nang walang dahilan. Also, young engineers tend to be respectful. It's easy to ask older electricians by requests or compliments, but you have to keep it in a way na you'll gain respect.

Bakit kaya? Well, tempting magwork sa ibang bansa, makakapag-ipon kaagad at in a way, karangalan din para sa pamilya mo na nagsakripisyo kaw at makakatulong sa kanila. But what makes many of our brothers, as well sa sa mga kapatid na babae na din, ang magdesisyon mag-abroad?

Iba-iba ang pwede puntahan sa ganitong klaseng environment, andun yung implementing engineer or project in charge, pwede ding QA, or design engineer, pweding sa sales.

Well, haay naku, hirap naman pala maging engineer. Hirap na nga maghanap ng trabaho, MAS MAHIRAP PA MAGHANAP NG TRABAHO NA MATINO.

Welcome to Wherever You Are (Translation) by Bon Jovi

I have never liked the type of music bon jovi plays when I was a child.. but yesterday, Jan. 15, 2013, I happened to listen one of his songs and found it very real and meaningful. :)

Maybe we're different, but we're still the same

We all got the blood of Eden, running through our veins

I know sometimes it's hard for you to see
Lam kong mahirap para sa yo mapagtanto

You come between just who you are and who you wanna be

If you feel alone, and lost and need a friend

Remember every new beginning, is some beginning's end

Welcome to wherever you are

This is your life, you made it this far

Welcome, you gotta believe
Tuloy ka, manalig ka lang

That right here right now, you're exactly where you're supposed to be
Karapatdapat namang andito ka

Welcome, to wherever you are
Tuloy lang, tuloy ka.

When everybody's in, and you're left out
Kung ikaw ma’y minsan napag-iiwanan

And you feel your drowning, in a shadow of a doubt

Everyones a miracle in their own way
Lahat tayo’y may mahika sa kanya-kanyang paraan

Just listen to yourself, not what other people say
Wag makinig sa iba, sarili’y paniwalaan.

When it seems you're lost, alone and feeling down
Kung ikaw man ay nawawala, nalulungkot at nag-iisa

Remember everybody's different
Tandaan mong lahat tayo’y iba-iba

Just take a look around
Tumingin ka lang, kaibigan

Be who you want to, be who you are
Magpakatotoo ka, at sa gusto mong maging

Everyones a hero, everyones a star
Lahat tayo’y bayani, lahat tayo’y bituin

When you wanna give up, and your hearts about to break

Remember that you're perfect, God makes no mistakes

Solar powered building, kasama and wind energy

To quote Philippine Star (dated May 3, 2011), " ___'s most recent green initiative is the utilization of a solar-powered air-conditioning system". One of today’s fast-growing green trends, solar-powered air-conditioning systems merge economics, advanced technology, and ecology, and harness heat from the sun, a clean, consistent, and safe power source

Ang ginamit ==> Hybrid solar and wind electric system.

Paano it gumagana?

Basically, hunting refers to SPEED VARIATION as the governor, or speed controller tries to find the correct speed, kaya tinatawag na HUNTING (hunting ng speed).

Reverse Power

REVERSE POWER?!!? (?ghslfh?!I)

SOLUTION:

Ano yun??? hehehe

Solution:

Another Solution:

======================================================

In a generator, residual magnetism, also known as 'remanence' or remanent flux, is due to the hysteresis of the magnetic material in the core. When the current is removed, the magnetic flux often remains at some non-zero value. This is a characteristic phenomenon of ferromagnetic materials.

The residual voltage after a generator has been stopped is due to the capacitance of the insulation system. On medium voltage generators, this capacitance can store a fairly significant amount of charge, and will give an unpleasant shock if you happen to contact it before being discharged.

The other answerer mentioned that it is residual magnetism which is responsible for some form of excitation. In large generators, the field excitation is practically always externally controlled. In medium and smaller generators, a permanent magnet exciter is used to generate the current for field excitation. And, while permanent magnets do offer the most obvious form of residual magnetism, their magnetism is not dependent on generator currents, as implied by the earlier answerer. (nosebleed)

The Road Not Taken (bow!) with TAGALOG TRANSLATION

Due to spare time, nakapagtranslate ako ng isang tula. (hehe)

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
Dalawang daang naghiwalay sa may kakahuyan
And sorry I could not travel both
Ako’y nanghihinayang dahil dapat pamilian
And be one traveler, long I stood
Sa paglalakbay, matagal akong nakatayo’t nakatanaw
And looked down one as far as I could
Napatingin sa pinakamalayo ng unang daan
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
Kagyat kong pinili ngayon itong pangalawa
And having perhaps the better claim,
Dahil siguro mas makabubuting landasin kesa sa isa
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Subalit sa pagpili sa daang magkasanga
Had worn them really about the same,
Mapagtatantong sila’y magkahawig din pala
And both that morning equally lay
O, sa umagang yun sila ay parehong
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Walang bakas ni isang pares ng paa!
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
Kahit alam kong sa paglalakbay na ito
I doubted if I should ever come back.
Mahirap nang bumalik pa sa umpisa
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Minsan nakaraan na ang ilang taon
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
May dalawang kalsada akong pinamilian
I took the one less traveled by,
Aking tinahak ang di masyadong napupuntahan
And that has made all the difference.
At malaking pagbabago na mula doon. ;)

3) Idouble check baka me sunog na part.

Note: I-off ang breaker at RESET.

2) PAG HINDI NAGTRIP ANG BREAKER AGAD ==> iturn off lahat ng appliances o load, o switches at isa isang pagananahin.

1)

Efficiency Expert

The efficiency expert concluded his lecture with a note of caution. "You don't want to try these techniques at home."

"Why not?" asked someone from the back of the audience.

"I watched my wife's routine at breakfast for years," the expert explained.

"She made lots of trips to the refrigerator, stove, table and cabinets, often carrying just a single item at a time. 'Hon,' I suggested, 'Why don't you try carrying several things at once?'"

The voice from the back asked, "Did it save time?"

The expert replied, "Actually, yes. It used to take her 20 minutes to get breakfast ready. Now I do it in seven." (oo nag naman, hehe)

2) The Misplaced Engineer

An engineer dies and reports to the pearly gates. St. Peter checks his dossier and says, "Ah, you're an engineer - You're in the wrong place."

Pretty soon, the engineer gets dissatisfied with the level of comfort in hell, and starts designing and building improvements. After a while, they've got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators, and the engineer is a pretty popular guy.

One day God calls Satan up on the phone and says with a sneer,"So, how's it going down there in hell?"

Satan replies, "Hey, things are going great. We've got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators, and there's no telling what this engineer is going to come up with next."

God replies, "What? You've got an engineer? That's a mistake - he should never have gotten down there. Send him back up."

Satan says, "No way. I like having an engineer on the staff, and I'm keeping him."

God says, "Send him back up here or I'll sue!"

Satan laughs uproariously and answers, "Yeah, right. And just where are you going to get a lawyer?" (well, NC)

1) White wires - almost always connect to other white wires or to chrome terminal screws on switches and receptacles.

2) Black wires always signify “hot” wires that conduct electricity to an outlet or switch. These are never to be utilized for a ground or neutral connection.

3) Red wires also signify “hot” wires or switch legs. In 220-volt installations, the red wire is considered the second “hot” wire.

4)
Blue and yellow wires are also used for “hot” wires, usually being pulled into a conduit. Blue is usually used for travelers in three way and four way switches or as switch legs in lights and fans.

5) Yellow wires and typically used as switch legs to control switched outlets.

5) Green and bare wires and only used as ground wires. They will ground what you are working on and will normally be bonded to appliance connection and junction boxes for safety.

A Day of Troubleshooting

No system is a perfect. Even a system with NO MOVING PARTS is subject to failures due to certain circumstances.

ISSUE:

Breaker tends to go to TRIP POSITION when TURNED ON.

Solution.

1) Do PERSONAL OBSERVATION. If possible, go blindly to whatever the others are saying and

try to see the problem by yourself FIRST.

2) Listen to others. After getting an own observation, listen to what the others are saying, what solutions have tried to be done or if there are other complications that have been added to the picture:

3) Pinpoint location or affected circuit.

4) CATEGORIZE and DETERMINE possible CAUSES.

In any failure, we have 5 general categories:

a) item, equipment or device doesn’t work ( b) flickering of light, blinking (c) dimming or brightening of light sometimes (d) item, equipment or device doesn’t turn off

e) shock

From those categories, malalaman natin kung ano ang possible causes. Like for example, if we experience shock, GROUNDING ang cause nito.

5) Use INSTRUMENTS to evaluate the affected area.

About 2 ft from ground, there’s a small opening in the lighting post, for the wiring of the street lamps.

6) Do necessary action.

Inside the BIG BOX

MCC, 440 V, Free-standing in Nema I enclosure and to contain the ff:

Main: 700 AT, 3P, MCCB

Metering:
1 - Digital multimeter
5 - Cylindrical fuse
3 - current transformer

Sa electrical engineering, maraming field and pwede pasukin.

Haruy.

Fire Alarm System

Sunog! Sunog! Sunog!! =( sunog buhay tepok. haruy... kaya kailangan atin bahay fire alarm system.

Fire Alarm Systems

A home fire alarm system is usually part of a total security system providing burglary protection in addition to fire protection. Such a system supervises doors, windows, and spaces within the home for break-in and may provide monitoring services by dialing your telephone to report a fire or intrusion to a security office, where it will be reported to your local police or fire department.

Components of the System

These systems consist of a central control panel to which smoke alarms and heat detectors are connected, along with bells or horns that are activated when the system triggers an alarm. Other sensors associated with the burglary functions connect to doors and windows or monitor rooms for motion or body heat. The control panel operates from house power but also usually contains an emergency battery which can operate the system for about 24 hours during a power outage.

The basic requirements for the number and locations of alarms are exactly the same as with the self-contained alarms discussed previously. The difference is that a fire alarm system gives you more flexibility to locate additional alarms and additional bells or horns (or flashing lights, should a person in the household be hearing impaired).

Fire alarm systems that provide remote monitoring services can also be used to provide medical alert services. Here a person with health problems who lives alone carries a radio transmitter that can trigger the system in case they need assistance. Signals received at the monitoring station are identified by type (fire, burglary, medical alert) so that the proper response can be made.

Why Have a Residential Fire Alarm System?

The primary advantage of a home fire alarm system is increased reliability and the ability to place alarms and bells exactly where needed. However, the reason most people have them is that they wanted a burglar alarm system and the cost of adding fire alarm features to a residential burglary system is relatively small.

Another advantage is that they are the only way to obtain remote monitoring services. This becomes important in cases where family members may not be capable of escaping from a fire without assistance. For example, if you have an older or physically impaired person in your home and a fire started when no one was home to assist that person, alarms alone might not be enough to assure their safety.

A feature of most monitoring services is the ability to keep special information on the residence which comes up on the computer screen whenever an alarm is received from that home. Thus, if there is a disabled person in the home who needs special assistance this fact will be known to the operator and can be passed along to the fire department when they are called.
